Trepat in Conca de Barberà: A Tasting Guide and Cellar Day
Explore Trepat through a compact Conca de Barberà day from Montblanc, with a Pira cellar appointment, tasting questions and transport planning.

Trepat is a good reason to turn inland from the Tarragona coast. Conca de Barberà’s native red grape is associated with rosé and lighter, fragrant reds. A tasting near Montblanc lets you compare those styles and spend the afternoon in the walled town.
The day: start in Montblanc, visit a booked cellar in nearby Pira, then return for lunch and a walk inside the walls. Allow five to seven hours, including roughly 15–20 minutes driving each way. Budget an estimated €20–40 per person for the visit and €25–40 for lunch, with transport quoted separately. Book a return taxi or designate a driver who will not drink.
What Trepat should tell you in the glass
The DO Conca de Barberà introduction identifies Trepat as the region's native red variety, historically associated with rosé and increasingly used for lighter, fruit-led reds. That is a useful starting expectation, not a promise that every bottle tastes alike. Ask for a varietal Trepat first, followed by a second example with a different ageing regime if the producer offers one.
Start with colour, then compare the aromas before and after swirling the glass. A pale red may still have tannin and a long finish. Use a few words you will remember when buying—floral, fresh, spicy or oaky—and ask the host how the wine was made.
Rosé is worth including if available. Comparing it with a red from the same grape makes the influence of skin contact and winemaking more tangible than another long list of varieties. Ask which bottles are wholly Trepat and which are blends; the appellation on a label does not itself mean a wine is made from that single grape.

Anchor the appointment in Pira
Carles Andreu is a practical candidate because Pira is close to Montblanc and the producer appears in the Costa Daurada tourism directory. Its wines and sparkling wines make the booking question especially important: request a visit that actually includes still Trepat, rather than assuming every tasting revolves around it.
Information checked September 2026. Arrange the Carles Andreu visit directly, specifying still Trepat, your language and the number of guests. The tourism directory does not publish a current standard tariff; €20–40 is a planning allowance. Ask about the fee for non-drinkers and any steps in the tour route when booking.
For a morning visit, aim to arrive in Pira 15 minutes before the appointment and allow 75–100 minutes on site. Park where the producer directs you; village streets are not overflow tasting-room parking. If the only available visit is after lunch, reverse the day and eat lightly enough to taste comfortably.
The DO’s Trepat route announcement names further producers around Pira, Barberà de la Conca and Montblanc. Use it to find a cellar for a future visit; any offers or opening arrangements need confirmation with that producer.

Montblanc gives the tasting a useful pause
Return to Montblanc for a seated lunch rather than driving straight to another village. Choose a restaurant within walking distance of your parking place and allow at least an hour. Mushrooms, roast poultry or a vegetable dish can provide a gentler comparison for a light red than an aggressively sweet sauce. Ask the restaurant which Trepat it pours by the glass, but do not feel obliged to drink more after a full tasting.
After lunch, make a short circuit through the streets inside the walls and around Plaça Major. Budget 45–75 minutes for an unhurried walk with a coffee stop. Cobbles, gradients and occasional steps mean that “compact town” does not guarantee a fully accessible route; visitors using wheels should choose a short, confirmed path from parking to restaurant rather than committing to every historic lane.
If you want to continue the comparison, buy two contrasting Trepat bottles to taste at home. Ask about serving temperature and which to open first, then leave the afternoon for Montblanc.
Arrange the return before the first pour
Montblanc is the useful meeting point for a group arriving by rail, but a train ticket does not solve the last leg to Pira. Check the date-specific journey and any works on Rodalies de Catalunya, then prearrange a taxi with both outbound and return times. There is no reason to assume a taxi will be waiting outside a rural cellar. Obtain a total fare, waiting-time policy and pickup contact in writing.
A private vehicle offers flexibility only with an abstaining driver. For two people sharing paid transfers, transport can exceed the tasting fee; compare the full quote before choosing accommodation. Staying in Montblanc makes the afternoon pedestrian and removes pressure to catch a tightly timed onward connection.
If harvest work prevents visits, keep the Montblanc lunch and ask a wine shop for a locally produced Trepat with clear origin and producer information. A shop purchase does not replicate a cellar tour, but it preserves the subject of the day without turning up at a working winery uninvited. In hot weather carry bottles out of the sun and avoid leaving purchases in a parked car while you walk the town.
If keeping the evening in town, compare Montblanc stays within walking distance of dinner. Arrange the Pira transfer separately; a central room does not include a winery pickup.
